Creating an attractive interface is only one part of a UI/UX designer's responsibility. Before a website or mobile application can be developed, designers must communicate how each screen should look, behave, and respond to user interactions.
This process is known as design handoff. A well-prepared handoff helps designers and developers work together while reducing misunderstandings during implementation.
What Is Design Handoff?
Design handoff is the process of sharing design specifications, assets, layouts, and interaction details with the development team. It connects the design stage with the technical implementation of a digital product.
For example, a designer might create a mobile appointment-booking interface in Figma. The developer needs to understand the spacing, typography, button states, screen transitions, and behaviour of the booking form before building the application.
A visual mockup alone may not communicate every detail required for development.
Four Things Designers Should Prepare
1. Organise design files
Use clear page names, consistent component structures, and descriptive layer names. An organised Figma file makes it easier for other team members to understand the design.
2. Define reusable components
Buttons, input fields, navigation elements, and cards should follow consistent design rules. Reusable components help maintain visual consistency across screens.
3. Explain interactions and states
Show what happens when users hover over a button, submit a form, encounter an error, or complete an action. Include empty, loading, success, and error states where relevant.
4. Provide assets and specifications
Make sure developers can access the required icons, illustrations, typography information, spacing values, and responsive layout guidance.
Why Is This Skill Important?
Clear design handoffs can reduce avoidable rework and improve communication between designers and developers. They also encourage designers to think beyond individual screens and consider how the complete product will function.
Beginners can practise by designing a small booking application in Figma and preparing a handoff file that another person could realistically implement.
